Plato believed in the knowledge but not empirical one but pure, ideal. It came from the "Allegory of the cave" where people were staring at shadows and knew only those forms of shadows.

We reach true knowledge by reasoning

Things in the world are just perceived via our senses but we all have an form of ideal object. We could perceive ideal triangle even it doesn't exist in the real world, so there must be a world of Ideas.

Plato laid the foundations of 17th century rationalism.

According to his theory all earthy phenomena such as justice or colour green are shadows of ideal counterparts called forms.
